ICS Fall Book Fair

As our annual Book Fair approaches, I want to make everyone aware of several items.

First, our Online Fair is now open and will remain open until October 11. You may find it an easy way to purchase books if you are unable to stop in at the school, or wish to purchase secret gifts for special occasions.

Second, we’ll once again have our “All for Books” collection box at the Book Fair. Students are encouraged to donate their loose change to help purchase books for the Library. Students who donate .50 or more will have their name placed in a drawing for one of four prizes.

Third, if you would like to help purchase books for your child/children’s classroom library you may do so by returning the wish list form that was sent home in the Family Folder this week, in an envelope marked “Teacher’s Wish List”.

Lastly, remember that the Book Fair will be open during Knights’ Night on September 30th. It will be a good opportunity to stop by and review the books your child/children placed on their wish list.

All purchases benefit the ICS library. Thank you for your support of reading in our school.

Sincerely,

Mrs. Gilbert, Librarian

Summer Reading

Welcome Summer!

As everyone settles into the new summer routine, I want to remind you to keep reading. Do not forget the “Tape the Librarian to the Wall” challenge. Be sure to read at least 20 minutes a day and keep track of your reading on the form you received at school in May. Our goal is to read at least 73,000 minutes as a school!

Also, our Book Fair will be held in the library the week of September 15th.

Have a great summer,

Mrs. Gilbert

Happy New Year!

Welcome to 2014! In between all of the weather delays, we are continuing to improve our use of all the resources a library has to offer. Some of the topics we are covering include how fiction and non-fiction are arranged in a library, learning about individual authors, what a periodical is, how we can use the internet for efficient research, and exploring short stories.

A special thank you goes out to grades 2 and 5 for their special monetary gift to purchase new books for our library! The money will be used at our BOGO Book Fair, to be held April 14-16. The money will go twice as far that way.

These cold winter days/evenings are a great time to settle in with a good book. Happy reading!

Welcome to a new school year!

Welcome Back! I hope everyone has had a safe and enjoyable summer. I am looking forward to seeing all of our students in the library this year to share stories and learn library skill.

We shall start the year with a general review of the library and its use.

Please note that our Scholastic Book Fair will be held the week of September 15th. Watch the family folder for more details. Parent and grandparent volunteers will be needed to assist the students during the fair.

Welcome Spring

Spring is here and Easter is upon us! I hope that your family has used the students’ Lenten folders to practice almsgiving this Lenten season. Please return them by April 3rd.

If anyone has questions about the Harrisburg Senators reading program, please contact me. Your child should have received a book mark this week, upon which to record the books they will read in the next few weeks.

Our BOGO Book Fair is coming soon- the week of April 22. Watch for a schedule to come home after Easter. Any parents or grandparents interested in helping staff the fair should let me know. Your help would be greatly appreciated.

Grades K- 4 continue to explore all that a library has to offer. We do more than just check out books.

Grades 5 – 8 have been practicing their research skills. Grade 6 is currently researching one of their favorite authors and grades 7 and 8 are researching to discover the real name of an author. They started with the author’s pseudonym. Can

they solve the mystery using their research skills?

Happy Easter!!

Happy New Year!!

Welcome to 2013!!

At the library we are “reading into the new year”! Grades K-2 continue to explore the various kinds of books available to them in our library. Some weeks they are required to check out a particular kind of book to explore. I hope you can take the time to explore it with them.

As we approach Groundhog Day/Candlemas Day grades 3 & 4 will be talking about legends and folklore. The 4th grade is finishing up a discussion of textiles and weaving by weaving their own bookmarks.

Grade 5 continues to practice their listening skills as they listen to a reading of The Cay by Theodore Taylor. It is a story of prejudice, love and survival. Along with this, they continue to learn how to use the library.

In grades 6-8 the focus is now on using the resources of the library for research. We will be discussing the OPAC, the use of databases and the effective use of the internet. The classes will be doing mini-projects in class to practice using these research tools.

Please help your child/children to return their borrowed library books promptly.

I hope you can use some of these dark, cold evenings to snuggle up with your child and read a good book!

Mrs. Gilbert
